BTW, have you figured out how to post pictures and make links yet? You'll need the web address of the picture or link, then...

Global Citizens?

As we figure out career paths, issues, ourselves, and plan for the future, we are faced with a world that is very small and very big at the same time. One reason I think it is small is because technology has made everything available to us all the time. I also think that globalization has robbed many communities of their identity, making strip-malls out of towns and turning people into buyers, and threatening the environment. I think it is big (maybe cold or lonely) because all of these changes make it harder for individuals to make meaningful connections to the people and places around them.

Our Planning course has moved back and forth from the individual (health, careers, skills) to society (issues, health, etc.). One idea that links the parts of the course is "citizenship" -- what does it take to be a member of society? Where does personal freedom and social responsibility begin?

I invite your comments (here or on your blog) on the topics of media awareness, globalization, citizenship, fast-food culture, or challenges to identity.

Why Oyster?

Why not? (we called our site the Oyster in December)... it shows that what we create here (on the blog, in class, in life) is a work in progress and is often messy and a matter of taste.... plus, Brandon D's mom's friend found a pearl in a can of oysters last week.

Career Focus

Very neat projects, folks. Did doing your posters/projects change your mind about a future career? Did it help any of you pick something you might want to try one day? I'm also glad we could help support Richard's film-making career and Eric's acting career! What do you think will be the most challenging part about working a full-time job? For me, it is the feeling of being "locked in" -- I have to keep showing up if I want to get paid... I can't choose my own hours or stay home when I'm sick or distracted by other things like a good book or daughter who has learned to squeal (without first preparing for a sub). Good thing I like my job!

Supersize Me!

What did you think of the movie? You can respond here as a comment or post a response on your own blog. As an occasional eater of fast food, I found the movie disturbing, kind of a refresher on why I should lim it the junk food intake even though it tastes so good. I'm not getting any younger and the fast food, as good as it tastes, is probably shortening my life. Visit the Supersize Me website for some interesting info and free downloads (like the theme song).

Where I went to University

I went to UBC and SFU. I've written some stuff about these places on my other (non-Planning) blog -- thielmann.blogspot.com
